' Songs for Change is a project to encourage writers to address contemporary issues. A project to expose the plight of the victims of the powerful. Songs that focus on these issues are important in both raising the awareness of injustice and in uniting those who oppose the conditions of that injustice. Such songs reveal and reinforce the belief that we can create a better and fairer world in which to live; a system where the principles of equality, justice and liberty can challenge and replace those of hierarchy, order and discipline. It is a force that can contribute to the creation of internationalism, a form of globalisation that appeals to me. Alone songs will not change the world but they do contribute to a sense of unity that we need. A sense of solidarity rather than isolation. This is why the Songs for Change project is so essential.'
Roy Bailey, 'the greatest socialist folk singer of his generation' (Tony Benn), www.roybailey.net ‘Historically, political songs have been used to provide a voice to the silenced, to sustain political campaigns, to express discontent, to generate support, to motivate, to provoke, to educate and to mock. In these times of political upheaval, the Songs for Change project offers an exciting opportunity for songwriters to reflect on contemporary issues and, of course, assist the Centre for Political Song in documenting our social, political and cultural history.’ The Centre for Political Song, www.caledonian.ac.uk/politicalsong |
